I hired on with the Castle Rock Police Department on April 14, 1978. I was the fourth officer. There was no backup. You took the call, you did the investigation, you did the follow-up, and it did not matter whether it was a loose horse or a shooting.
Forty years later I walked out as a commander, and twice in there I ran the department as acting chief for a total of four years. I have watched this town go from a ranching stop on the interstate to what it is now. You grow with it. You look for ways to do better.
I am supporting Laura Cavey for Mayor.
I spent forty years hiring police officers, and what I looked for was somebody who could talk to a neighbor like a neighbor. I was even the last and deciding vote to hire Police Chief Jack Cauley.
Laura is that neighbor for the entire community of Castle Rock. Laura’s honesty and integrity are sound and beyond reproach.
Laura knows her community as well. A couple of years ago, an incident at the Douglas County Fairgrounds created a serious issue for many citizens believing their children were not safe. Laura, knowing her jurisdictional boundaries, immediately took charge to create a municipal law that would be enforced at the Fairgrounds by the Castle Rock Police Department as the primary law enforcement agency. She does her homework before she acts to ensure she’s legally solid.
Public safety in this growing town is a serious issue for Laura, and she shows it by supporting funding for officer training, salaries, equipment, communication systems and quality personnel that provide professional customer service to the citizens and other organizations.
I still run cattle here and my family has been in this county since 1934, my whole life and before.
Over forty years, I dedicated my life to the Town of Castle Rock, and I want what I have always wanted for this town. Keep it safe, and keep it a place where people still know their neighbors.
